Shambles Street : (North side) : Marsland & Guest
Shambles Street got its ancient name from the butchers' stalls that were set up at the busy entrance to the street (from Market Hill/Church Street) on market and fair days. A narrow street at the junction, it widened and formed a major routeway into and out of town, known as Westgate or West Way (not to be confused with the other Westgate Barnsley street name). Here at number 35 we can see a butcher's shop, Guest's, joints hanging in the window and outside! Not something that would be allowed these days! The projecting building at 37 is Sam Marsland's Steam Bakery and confectioners. This image dates from about 1898 when Marslands operated. Sam was a keen swimmer and a Barnsley police Swimming instructor, quite a character by all accounts.
