Market Hill/Queen Street.

Image

A c.1950s view of Queens Street, taken from the bottom of Market Hill. The Burtons (the tailor's) building is a dominating feature, clad in white limestone and with a curved frontage. Burtons liked to brand their buildings using similar materials, logos etc during the 1930s. Across the road is an equally iconic 'chain store', the M & S building. Some of Barnsley's best buildings appeared in the period we now refer to as 'Art décor'. At the bottom of Market Hill part of Wadsworths famous ironmonger's shop can be seen, established in the 1870s, and becoming Reynolds & Wadsworths.
