Shambles Street : (North side) : Old White Bear (1)

Image

The white-painted/plastered Old White Bear (number 19) was one of the town's most ancient inns, dating back to medieval times. It had been used as the HQ for Barnsley Races (horse races) and for a variety of important meetings ranging from mining unions to auctions. Timber-framed, it functioned until the late 1930s, its last host having the formidable name of Dyson Mountain. A little further on, at 21, stood the Sovereign Inn, a relatively modern building extending to 3 storeys.
