Queen Street: Harrall's Stores (view 1)

Image

Harrall's Stores stood at the south (Market Hill) side of Queen Street at Number 1, in an old building that had a Venetian or palladian window to its first floor and a pediment above the third storey, all very grand. Adjoining buildings also had palladian windows, obscured I later years by garish advertising. 'Harral's Shops give the best Value' was the prominent logo/illuminated sign above the shop. Harrals were in business here from about 1913 to the early 1980s, right next to Market Street. The rather grand buildings at the start of the south side of Queen Street included two old inns: the Lord Nelson (number 5) and the White Swan (number 7). Note the vehicular arched way between numbers 3 and 5 leading to a backyard.
