Shambles Street: Beaumont's herbalist (north side)

Image

Beaumont's the herbalist was a very specialised business much used by Barnsley folk at a time when all medicine was private and therefore out of range of many people. The use of herbs and associated drinks etc was also very popular for a variety of health and 'non-medical' purposes. Beaumont's stood on the site of the old Three Crowns Inn and was next door to the Three Tavellers Inn, therefor in a prime location, functioning until about 1903, so this image is quite early. Perhaps it was 'Mrs Beaumont' who appreared for the photograph, wearing her working attire and the shop lad also adds interest. Half of the main window advertises Beaumont's 'Medical Hall & Temperance Institute', so would have been a fashionable venue in Victorian and Edwardian times.
