Shambles Street : (North side) : Old White Bear Inn (4)
This rare image of the Old White Bear probably dates from the early 1930s when William Darren was in charge. The building, though recognizable, is no longer painted white and the Oakwell Ales sign has been placed centrally over old signage work. Note the Barnsley Tyre Depot shop next door and Mitchell's upholstery sign and shop. Also worth seeing is the large 'Bacon Factor' sign on the upper wall of the old Sovereign Inn. A Factor was a person or business who sourced special provisions eg cheese, bacon, tea etc from large markets/exchanges to sell to smaller traders.
