Shambles Street : general view
This early 1960s view looking along the upper part of the street helps us to appreciate the mix of properties and styles that existed at this point. The sign of the Travellers Inn, with its Oakwell Ales logo is obvious at the left foreground, and on the opposite side the projecting triple-storey structure numbered '37' is prominent. Number 37 was occupied by Lawson's radio shop up to 1951 and then Downend & Lister's cycle shop. These properties were demolished in about 1964. Just beyond 37 was the entry into Rich Lane, with the old Windmill Hotel at the opposite side of the entrance. So, as late as the early 1960s a glimpse of a much older Shambles Street was still evident. The lady doing her shopping, close to Rich Lane adds interest to the street scene. Note, also the fly-posting : two posters stuck on an old doorway for instance relate to the arrival of the circus and an advert for the town paper, the Barnsley Chronicle. More posters have been placed in the windows of Carnevale's fish shop which appears to have become empty, awaiting a short lease and then demolition. These properties, nevertheless, are of a fine stone-built nature, though clearly have seen better times.
