Shambles Street : (North side) : Old Windmill Hotel & Downend & Lister(1)

Image

This image can be usefully compared with the general view of the street : 1289. Here we get a closer view of number 37 when the shop part of the building was used by Downend & Lister (cycles, prams, hardware); and also there's a good view of the Old Windmill Inn/Hotel, the white-painted building just beyond the Rich Lane entrance. A Mr Rich held the licence ion the early eighteenth century, so his name may have been given to the adjacent lane. The hotel/inn was named after Barnsley's old windmill. Many towns and villages had wind-powered mills, the miller grinding the corn and animal feed of local farms and smallholdings; and usually associated with old manorial rights.
