Shambles Street : (North side) : Pollyanna Boutique

Image

The Pollyanna Boutique was located at number 55 from 1967-69. With its distinctive logo and graphics, the shop brought the latest fashions for young people to Barnsley, under the direction of Rita Britton. The shop was set within a late Georgian building which had a fine trio of sash windows to the first floor and an antic (servants') storey above. It probably served as a private high-status dwelling for many earlier years. Rita moved her shop to several other town centre locations, finally settling into a 4-storey historic building on Market Hill, the premises also housing a cafe. By then Rita's innovations and fashions had become internationally famous. Following illness, Rita closed her landmark Barnsley shop in 2014.
