Cheapside: Baileys/Co-op/ Littlewoods 1960s

Image

Ed. Bailey's 'Everything but the baby' store's most famous feature was an illuminated stork displayed in neon on the roof of the building (No.17). Bailey's traded here from 1883 to 1968. Next door at number 16 was the BBCS Co-op's 'self-service' store. Littlewoods's Art Deco 'Portland-style' frontage dates from 1939, trading here until the site was demolished in 1974 (replaced largely by British Home Stores).
