Sheffield Road (West side) : Gallons & Baptist Chapel

Image

Gallons (No.89) had one of the longest continuous occupancies on the street, opened in 1909 until 1961. It was a pioneering grocer's shop, but part of a chain of similar examples located in nearby towns. The tiled floor level frontage added a touch of class beneath its dual windows, each with impressive displays of packaged foodstuffs, teas etc.Tiles were alsoto form part of the upper brand-name signage. Gallons was located at the entrance to Britannia Street, and at the opposite entrance stood the large soot-black Baptist chapel, which was here from 1849 to 1969. Gallons closed in 1961, about the time this image was taken.
