Summer Lane (west side) : McLintock's

Image

The large industrial building dominating the background of this c.1964 image is McKlintock's Mill/factory, famous for its manufacture of quilts, established in the 1860s. The solid-looking detached house at 38, just before McKintock's, was demolished and the space then occupied by Wharncliffe garag (named after Wharncliffe Street). Brick-built, of double-depth form and extending to 5 storeys, McKlintocks was one of the town's largest single employers, particularly of female labour.
