Summer Lane (west side) : 70-72 & Commercial Inn (1)

Image

This 1964 image shows 70-72, a former private residence of relatively grand proportions and the low-rise butcher's, Parkin & Son. The Commercial Inn with its Barnsley Bitter sign, painted white, stands out, overlooking the main road. It was an inn from about 1865 but prevously a 'beer house'. Harry Senior was in charge of this 'Oakwell' pub in 1964. Summer Lane curves slightly in the distance, just as it passes under the railway bridge, with the eblazoned name : QUALTER HALL & CO LTD ENGINEERS on the metalwork.
