Summer Lane (east side) : Terrace of workers' houses

Image

This terrace of c. 8 houses was built c.1860, providing convenient homes for mill workers. Notice the arched back entrance way towards Fitzwilliam Street. The sash windows each had 2 x 6 panes and there were low steps leading to the doorways of each property. This basic but soundly-built row was demolished in 1977 when new housing appeared, though the actual footprint of the old terrace was left as open space.
