Summer Lane (east side) : George & Dragon

Image

Sturdily-built but latterly painted white, the George & Dragon at the end of Prospect Street dates from the 1860s, a very convenient pub for the locals. In the 1960s its hosts were associated with the Dixon and McKay families. A common pub name, based on the patron saint and legend, the name also conjures the kind of patriotism that rose to prominence during wars and conflicts, and especially from the Crimea to the Great War.
