Summer Lane (west side) : Elliott's newsagent's

Image

At 62-64 in the early 1970s was Elliott's newsagent's shop, trading here until 2001. Newspapers can be seen on the rack on the left side of the outside of the building which has a double window allowing room for a variety of displays. It was also a place that sold smoking products, hence the Benson and Hedges signage. Next door at 66 was Dorothy Exley's small drapery shop, specializing in babywear. Above shop residential accommodation appears to have been available for the owners themselves or to rent out. The shops had been private as well as retail dwellings previously, going back to late Victorian times.
