May Day Green: Market Inn: 1960s (view 1)

Image

This image of the Market Inn really does show how close it was to the May Day Green market area. Its white-painted facade made it a landmark building when viewed from the market area or across from Cheapside. The lettering of the main sign is also prominent as is its unmistakable associations with 'Barnsley Bitter' and 'Barnsley Brewery'. The stone frontage has neo-classical features, particularly the pilasters and the 'veranda' that wraps its way around the middle of the facade dividing the floors. Also see E.G. Tasker's “Barnsley Streets” vol 4, pp 58-59.
