Wellington Street (west side) : Morton's

Image

Morton's fish and chip shop (number 9), was something of an institution for generations of Barnsley people as well as visitors, functioning from 1939 to 1994; and very well sited next to the Theatre Royale/Bingo. For some, its cafe was a popular option, though 'take-aways' the most popular choice. Morton's had quite a modern looking facade in the 1960s, the tiles and fine ashlar stonework contrasting with neighbouring buildings.
