Wellington Street (east side) : Adult School

Image

The central building is the Adult School (1897-1971). Along with the gabled building on the right it was demolished in 1971, the resultant open space converted into a car park. The Adult School movement began in the late 18th century and gathered in pace during the 19th century. By the time of the establishment of Barnsley's version there were almost 1900 similar schools nationwide, the forerunners of adult and community education in Britain. In industrail and working class areas their role was particularly important, providing citizens with access to a form of continuing education that would otherwise have been lost, most of the particiapants having left school at the age of 13.
