May Day Green: Raymond Varley & Freedom Hardy & Willis: 1960s

Image

Next to Wymans was a curved corner group of buildings: Raymond Varley's tailor's shop with its prominent sign and branded clock. Many Barnsley blokes purchased their suits from Varleys, established here from the 1930s. Raise your eyes to the upper storeys and the attractive windows can be appreciated. The even taller Freeman Hardy & Willis building next door also has distinctive arched windows. This footwear emporium had served several generations of Barnsley people from about 1901 until the range of buildings were lost in the late 1960s redevelopment of the town centre. Also see E.G.Tasker's 'Barnsley Streets' vol 4, p.61.
