May Day Green: market traders (view 5)

Image

This wonderful c.1900 photograph of the May Day Green market area has lots of interest, including what appears to be a personal weighing 'machine', a smartly-dressed man in a bowler pointing to a distant feature. Bowler hats were quite common at this time and not always a sign of status. Lads/boys also wore caps, notice the boy standing by the apparatus, perhaps less than ten years old. The stone-setted surface of the market is also well evident.
