May Day Green: snow clearance (view 1)

Image

During harsh winters when snow was a problem, the May Day Green and market areas (and main thoroughfares) were cleared by workmen using shovels and horse and carts: hard, manual work. This image shows piles of snow moved to 'convenient' locations near the Wellington Hotel and the fish market; but bystanders are mostly oblivious to the photographer and the situation. See E.G.Tasker's 'Barnsley Streets', vol.4, p.51.
