May Day Green: John Porter: hay, straw & peat
Market towns usually had many businesses directly related to farming. John Porter functioned off May Green between the Wellington Hotel and the Wire Trellis pub, at number 17 selling hay and straw;and also peat litter. This wonderful image showing the front of his premises probably dates from about 1900 though the fact that he had a telephone suggests a later period. Smartly dressed, Porter may be the senior figure in the doorway. The sacks of produce are also interesting features, advertising his business. Also notice the piles of hay. 'Chop' probably refers to the actual cutting process.
