Queen Street: royal celebration

Image

A wonderful c.1910 view of a busy day along Queen Street, taken from Peel Square/bottom of Market Hill. Fashionable ladies cross the road and policeman keeps control though there appears to be little in the way of traffic. Advertising signs include a prominent one for Barnsley Brewery. The street surface is paved with stone sets or 'cobbles' and the market at May Day Green is just descernable in the far distance. It may have been a sunny day, several shopkeepers on the left side of the street with their awnings down offering some shade. A variety of flags are also prominent features. Also see E.G.Tasker's 'Barnsley Streets' vol. 4, p. 46.
