Cheapside: (west side) : Alexandre/Althams/Baileys

Image

The photographers Lamb of Racecommon Road were the best postcard image publishers in Barnsley during the Edwardian period. This example features the west side of Cheapside. The gap between Althams and Baileys was a short street/area known as Spedding Fold, now Albert Street East. The grocers, Althams, were here (number 19) from 1877 to 1935. Alexandres were tailors, located at number 19 from 1925 to 1940. Baileys, the famous 'We provide everything but the baby' drapery shop were at number 17 from 1883 to 1968. See E.G. Tasker's 'Barnsley Streets' vol 1 page 90-91.
