May Day Green: mi-1970s redevelopment

Image

An interesting early 1970s photograph probably by Roy Portman looking across May Day Green, Kendray Street, towards Regent Street. This image was taken after the clearance of buildings that occupied much of the foreground at junction with Pontefract Road and New Street: see EG Tasker's Barnsley Streets vol 4, p.63 for comparison. The Farmers Butchers shop in view on the left was number 1 New Street and was here from 1976 to 1990, work in progress at the edge of the road.
