New Street (view 32) (Friendship & Trafalgar)

Image

A crowd gathers outside the Friendship Inn near the top of the junction of New Street and Wellington Street. News items appear to have been regularly 'broadcast' from this venue, the gathering spilling over the frontage of the Trafalgar Hotel. The decotated building in the foreground was Jabez Lodge's newsagent's shop from 1876-99. 'Trafalgar' was one of several names adopted by many pubs and inns in honour of the famous battle of 1805.
