Cheapside/New Street: Duke of York & charabanc

Image

The Booker family were important pioneers of public transport in Barnsley. Here, George Booker's charabanc is parked outside the Duke of York Hotel in about 1910;ithe landlord was Harry Nixon Booker (1909-10). Note the impressive and weather-resisting headwear of the ladies in particular. The Duke of York was sited at the junction of New Street, whose sign can be seen.
