Queen Street: The Three Cranes Hotel

Image

The Three Cranes Hotel was an important Barnsley building on a key site on the north side of Queen Street, not far from both the old market on the hill and May Day Green. This view was probably taken in about 1930 when Arthur Fairclough held the licence. The adjacent business premises: Bedford, was a 'hosier' (sock/stockings), functioning here from the 1880s to 1929: but it was clearly closed down when this image was taken. An outfitter: Ogden, had taken over but transferred to The Arcade – note the notification posters in the windows.
