May Day Green: Cross Keys Hotel 1960s

Image

The Cross Keys Hotel always had an imposing presence overlooking the May day market and standing next to the Kendray fish market. Its prominent gable end at the fish market end was always useful advertising space. A few locals, smartly dressed, have a chat under and by one of the fish market units; and the front of the building always attracted a few people to pause and chat. The hotel closed in the early 1970s and had been trading in its present form since 1866 when it was rebuilt. Earlier, it appears to have welcomed guests from at least the 1820s. The last host was John Callaghan.
