Wellington Street (west side) : Shakespeare Hotel (1)

Image

Will Shakespeare got around a bit, at least in terms of pub/hotel names. The 'white-fronted' Shakespeare goes back to at least the 1820s and has a long list of licensees. Extending to about five bays and quite low, just two storeys, it nevertheless had an obvious presence on the street. For many years it was a 'Barnsley Brewery' house, selling 'Oakwell Ales' of course.
